I’ll admit, I’m one of those people that truly believes that everything happens for a reason. We might not know right away what that reason is but we usually find out. I feel the same way about “signs” so imagine my surprise when I walked into my home office this morning and saw the image of two crosses on the floor. The image was made by the sun coming through the blinds but it was hard not to feel that it was God’s way of saying “here’s your sign.”
I’ve been going through a lot of personal issues for quite some time now. In the past I have pushed my feelings and concerns aside. They’ve caught up to me with a vengeance and have triggered my anxiety and depression. I have always been a Christian however, I haven’t always been a “good” Christian. Every morning I pray and thank the Lord for waking me to see another day. Every evening I pray and thank Him for seeing me through the day and thank Him for the blessings he’s given me (and He has given me many). In addition to this and many other things I discuss with Him, I also ask Him to send me a sign that I am following the right path. That is why the timing of the image was so important to me. I felt as though God was telling me to keep going and not to give up. And keep going I will.
I have made many poor choices in my life but somehow God always saw me through. Of course, not before teaching me a lesson or two. One of my poor choices led to a major heartbreak for my children and I as well as many other innocent people who did not deserve it. I remember my son asking me “where’s your God now mom?” For the first time in my life I truly did not know the answer because my faith had been shaken. I asked a friend of mine what she would have said to my son. Her response was that the guilty party was also a child of God just as we were and He would see to the proper punishment in time. Just like that, my faith had been restored because I knew that what she was saying was true. The thing to remember is that it is not up to us to decide the fate of others. We need to trust that God will handle it in His way and in His time.
You are responsible for your happiness
You know what makes you happy. For me, I’m happiest when I’m with my family. However, I am also happy when I spend time alone. That’s what a lot of people don’t understand. In order to be happy with others, you first have to learn to be happy with yourself. Take some time to get to know yourself. Really give it some thought and ask yourself, “what really makes me happy?” You’ll be glad you did.
Step out of your comfort zone
I know there are a lot of restrictions right now but as soon as you can, try doing something that takes you out of your comfort zone. Do something you normally wouldn’t do. For me that means making a YouTube video. Most of the training that I have done for blogging says that successful bloggers should make videos as well as blog so….I guess I’m going to have to figure out what to make a video of first and then try my hand at it. Trust me, that will take me WAY out of my comfort zone.
Be true to yourself
I tend to be a kind hearted person (hence the name of this site). I have a very hard time saying no to people. This has lead to a world of hurt for myself as well as those I love because I’ve spent so much time trying to please others that I forget to take care of me. What happens when I don’t take care of me? Meltdown. Trust me when I tell you that people aren’t going to unfriend you just because you choose to be kind to yourself. If you don’t want to do something simply tell them no. Repeat after me, NO. No excuses, just say “not this time.”
Know the signs
As I said earlier, I have been praying for God to give me a sign that the choices I’m making are the right ones for me. I believe the images of the crosses was exactly the sign I needed. But, I’d be lying if I said that the signs we get are always obvious. For instance; you come face to face with a homeless person, you turn and look away instead of smiling. Perhaps God put them in your path because they needed your smile to make them feel better about life. Maybe they had lost all hope and you were the one thing standing between them and something tragic.
Be the fighter you know you can be
There’s a time to be calm and let things go and there’s a time to fight. Only you know when you need to take a stand. In my case, I have always chosen to fight when my back was against the wall. I’m hoping that soon I will learn to stand up for myself before it gets to that point and I hope the same for you. Remember, that which doesn’t kill you makes you stronger!
“We are only give one life, it’s up to you what you do with it.” How many times have you heard that? The truth is, it’s the truth! So take the time, stop and smell the roses. You never know when God’s saying “Here’s Your Sign.”
